For the first time in history, the results of class 10th are going to be declared without the annual examinations. Though this year the zero pass percentage schools that were on the upside (from 22 in 2017 to 82 in 2019 and 32 in 2020) in the State will witness a drastic downturn, the 'objective' marking criteria adopted by the BSE may spring out big surprises for the students, feel experts..
The Element Of Surprise
Prior to the pandemic year 2021, students burn midnight oil to answer the questions set by the examiners. And the studentsalso have a transparent idea about their scoring in the exams. Then the element of surprise had been narrowed down to around 10 per cent only for a student.
However, as the pandemic has been into dictating a new world of rules for the society, the change order has impacted the realm of annual board examinations held in the country, including Odisha.
Masking is the buzzword now. And element of surprise has shot up to around 90 per cent now.

Even as the BSE has followed what it calls an 'objective' evaluation strategy to assess and award marks to the students, the determinants of the 'objective evaluation', however, is keeping the students on the tenterhooks.
As per BSE notification, a student will be evaluated broadly on the 4 determinants.
• Each subjects to have 100 marks
• But evaluation has been split into 40 per cent (class 9th performance) and 60 per cent (performance in Class-10th practice tests)
• The practice is a total of 3 practice tests conducted for class-10th students before they sit for the final board exam
• As per new evaluation scheme, 30 per cent weightage will be assigned for two highest marks secured by a student in all subjects.
In case, a student has not appeared for the practice tests then....
• 100 per cent weightage to marks secured subject wise in class-9th exam (in both half-yearly and annual)
• In case, a student has appeared for only one practice test, then the weightage for 9th exam will be only 70 per cent.
• Moreover, the BSE evaluation strategy has the component of analysing a school's 4-year (2017-20) academic performance in board exams
Why School's Academic Record?
"Since there is no uniformity in the questions sets in the internal exams of class 9th and practice tests of class 10th in schools across Odisha, the BSE has decided to analyse the academic score of each school based on their past performance for the 4 consecutive years of 2017 - 2020,” explained a senior official Bhubaneswar zone.
However, as per BSE notification, the board will award marks to candidates by choosing the best performance year of the school.
An example given below:
• If suppose a school under Bhubaneswar zone has an overall average of students performance in 2017 - 75 per cent, 2018 - 73 per cent, 2019- 71 per cent and 2020 - 70 per cent, then the board will choose the subject wise averages of the year of 2017 and award marks to a candidate in a graded way. Simply put, the reference year for evaluation will be 2017, not 2020.
• But the marking will be done in such a calibrated manner that the average marks of subjects in 2021 will not exceed the average of reference year 2017.
What Happens When Data For 2-yrs Available?
As per BSE, even if overall average of a single year is available then that year will be taken as reference year.
