After finishing her MBBS degree, she topped the State Civil Service exams in 2011 and became the first woman in Jammu & Kashmir to achieve the feat. Yet it did not stop her urge to achieve something bigger and she qualified for IAS.

Meet, IAS Syed Sehrish Asgar, the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Civil Services. The multi-talented bureaucrat was a medical doctor, IPS before finally becoming an IAS officer. She also is a public speaker, writer, and self-proclaimed learner and is presently serving the people of Baramulla as Deputy Commissioner.

Syed Sehrish Asgar is a second-generation civil services officer as her father, Syed Asghar was a 1977-batch Kashmir administrative service (KAS) officer, before joining politics.

According to sources, Syed Sehrish did her schooling at Presentation Convent in Jammu and was always a topper all through. She then joined Batra Medical College in 2003 and secured the first position in the MBBS in 2009.

Speaking about her motivation, Syed Sehrish said, “My father, who was in civil services, was my motivation. There are no female role models who represent Jammu & Kashmir. Here most of the women work in traditional fields. The women are either told to become doctors or teachers. I want to prove that women can also do well in administration.”

“I liked science so I joined MBBS. It was in college that I realized that if I became a civil servant I could be a ‘doctor’ for the whole society, which was not possible if I had only been a physician. I had cracked State Civil Service (SCS), but when you join IAS you get a bigger platform for policy formulation. You can contribute at higher levels.”

“So, more and more youths should serve the state in the future so that the state will move forward on various developmental fronts,” she added.

Recently she was awarded Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Civil Services 2022 for her contribution to civil services. Thanking the PM, Syed wrote, “On receiving the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Civil Services 2022, I take this opportunity to thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi ji for acknowledging the efforts made and Hon’ble LG Manoj Sinha ji for having faith in me. My gratitude to all of you for your wishes!!”
