While the Odisha government is busy transforming government schools into smart schools by upgrading infrastructure and facilities, acute shortage of staff has crippled the operation of Maa Kichakeswari College in Khiching of Mayurbhanj district.
The educational institution having hundreds of students is being run by a single lecturer, Mukesh Behera at present.
Behera, who is also shouldering the responsibilities of the principal of the college, said he was finding it s very difficult to run the college alone.

“I am facing a major challenge now. Because, I am the principal of the college as well as the lone lecturer. I have to teach all the students and look after other official works too. In case I go on leave for any reason, the college will remain closed,” said Behera.
“After the easing of lockdown, when we returned to the college, we were shocked to find that many of our lecturers had already retired from service. Now, there is one lecturer in our college and we are facing difficulties in our studies,” said Amit Kumar Giri, a student at the college.
“We are facing a lot of difficulties in our study due to lack of lecturers. I appeal to the government to look into the matter and appoint teachers immediately. We will hit the street if teachers are not appointed at the earliest,” said a girl student, Barsha Rani Nayak.
