The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has introduced a new admission gateway for admissions into Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Bachelor of Science (BS Programmes) through Olympiads.

From the academic session 2025-26, admission opens to such merit students into any one BTech Programmes and also through admission into any of its BS Programmes on basis of international class performance of Olympiad Winners in the international Mathematics/Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology/Informatics competitions of highest standard.

Programmes

IIT Kanpur will admit a small number of students in five departments: Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics. The new route circumvents the conventional JEE (Advanced) and allows admission based on the student's acumen and dedication demonstrated during Olympiad training camps.

"Under this program, IIT Kanpur will offer reserved seats in five departments: Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics," tweeted IIT Kanpur.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate should have passed Class XII or equivalent examination in 2019 or 2020. The candidate should have also qualified for an IIT as per JEE (Advanced) criteria in the same year.

It is compulsory that a candidate should have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

All applicants must have attended a training camp in the Olympiad subject he/she is applying to.

Students already admitted to IITs through JoSAA and whose IIT admissions get cancelled are not eligible.

Selection Process

Two procedures will be followed during the process of admission. The ranking of Olympiad will first be reviewed by the department, and the shortlisted candidates will appear for the written test, and the interview would be conducted as well.

Finally, the decision for getting the admission will be taken from the central selection committee through the Dean of Academic Affairs to ensure the departments' quota can be filled promptly.

Applications will be online from early March 2025. The screening and examinations will be done before the end of May, and final offer is expected to be in June 2025.

According to Prof. Shalabh, Dean of Academic Affairs, this olympiad-based admission route is intended to foster innovation and critical thinking by bringing diverse, analytically skilled individuals into IIT Kanpur’s academic community, thereby contributing to India's development and global competitiveness.
