Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to collaborate on Project Udaan, an AI-powered translation platform to broaden access to education across India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
Project Udaan harnesses advanced artificial intelligence tools such as optical character recognition (OCR), layout preservation, domain-specific glossaries, and human-in-the-loop editing. These components ensure the accurate and high-quality translation of academic and technical material into various Indian languages. This aligns with IGNOU’s aim to make its vast educational resources more accessible to learners across regions by offering content in multiple regional languages.
The collaboration directly supports the multilingual and inclusive vision set out in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy emphasises the importance of digital inclusion, equity in education, and the promotion of Indian languages in the academic sphere.
