In India, the position of IAS and IPS is highly looked upon and greatly admired. Aspirants in large numbers appear for the exam every year, but only a handful can crack it. While several aspirants belong to good backgrounds and have all the resources for their preparation, it is the stories of aspirants who come from humble backgrounds, yet make it despite limited sources that inspire us all.
One such inspiring tale of sacrifice and sheer determination is of IAS Ram Bhajan Kumar, who once worked as a daily labourer to extend a helping hand to his downtrodden family. He grappled with numerous challenges that involved a life without proper shelter.
Despite several obstacles, Ram did not give up on his dream and went on to secure an impressive AIR-667 in the UPSC examination. Hailing from the tiny village of Bapi in Rajasthan, Ram lived with his mother. As per Dainik Bhaskar, his daily work included breaking up stones with his mother, and shoulder huge stones every day.
Despite all the hard work, he would make a meagre income of Rs 5 to Rs 10 per day, barely enough to afford a single meal. While his mother worked along with him, his father would herd goats in the village. Things turned even worse after his father passed away due to asthma amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. This tragedy further pushed the family into severe poverty. His father’s death further pushed him into working as manual labourer as his mother could not maintain the family alone.
However, Ram always aspired to do something and come out of poverty. Despite working all day, he would take out time to prepare for his studies. After years of dedication and struggle, his hard work paid off after he qualified to become a constable with the Delhi Police.
It was during his constable days, that he learnt about the Civil Services Exam (CSE) and made up his mind that he would one day become an IAS or IPS officer. However, his preparation journey wasn’t a cakewalk. He had to work all day and sometimes at night as a constable.
However, to achieve his goal, he would always take out time for his preparation. Despite all the struggle, it took him eight attempts to finally make his dream come true. It is the rags-to-riches stories like that of Ram that instill hope in aspirants and India needs more aspirants like him who can inspire generations to come.
