A day after releasing the date sheet for the upcoming Term 1 examinations for Class 10 and 12 students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday explained its decision pertaining to the conduct of the crucial examination in two phases.
In an interview to ANI, CBSE Controller of Examination, Sanyam Bhardwaj cited two reasons-- the Covid-19 pandemic situation and the National Education Policy (NEP)—as factors behind the conduct of the term 1 and term 2 examinations.
According to Bhardwaj, the NEP has recommended the CBSE to provide more opportunities to students for appearing in the examinations and improve their performance. “Hence, we decided to go for term 1 and term 2 exams,” he said.

The term 1 will be of objective type and term 2 will be subjective paper, CBSE had announced earlier.
“Basically the reason was the Covid-19 pandemic situation during which we faced difficulties to prepare the results of students without holding the exams. So it was decided that the Board will be conducting the two phased exams,” said Bhardwaj.
The CBSE Controller of Examination further stated that final results will be based on both the terms. “But if due to pandemic the term 2 didn’t happen, then the results will be decided on the basis of term 1 performance. Term 1 will help students in knowing the areas they need to improve upon for the Term 2 exam,” he said.
For the smooth conduct of the examinations, there is a need to make the entire environment student friendly keeping in mind the Covid-19 pandemic. The Board is instructing the authorities to completely sanitise schools and teachers should take care of Covid related guidelines.
“As only 12 students will be allowed in one room/hall which is a fair number, we will be able to maintain social/ physical distance between two students,” Bhardwaj said.
Bhardwaj said the CBSE is preparing guidelines for schools on allowing students and for the conduct of the exam as well.
“We are trying to increase the number of examination centres and ensure that those are near the students. We are contemplating to fix schools as self-exam centres as parents and students have faith on their teachers and schools. It will be easier for them to appear the exams too. If need arises, special provisions for the students with disabilities will also be made,” Bhardwaj added.
