The Covid-19 induced lockdown and closure of schools has adversely affected the face-to-face or the physical mode of teaching across the country. Apart from considerable reduction in the time available to teachers for providing face-to-face instructions, the opportunities for hands-on teacher guided practical work for science has also been limited so far.
In a bid to address such issues, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with a set of alternate experiments to enable students to do/practice such activities at home. Interestingly, the learners can use these alternative experiments by using household materials.
It is pertinent to mention here that the CBSE, in September 2020, had issued a circular on the conduct of practical works during the lockdown. The schools were instructed to use the platform of OLabsto which facilitated a virtual experience of the curriculum aligned experiments/ activities for classes 9 to 12 students.

In its latest circular, the CBSE has suggested several hands-on activities which have been designed for similar learning outcomes for all the lab experiments required to be done in the academic session 2021-22 for class 9 and 10.
Apart from this, a list of additional activities from the NCERT lab manual for 9 (20 activities) and 10 (22 activities) have also been provided. Learners may use these to explore science concepts and gain better understanding, the circular read.
“These hands-on activities are accompanied by step-by-step guides, videos and worksheets for students to record observations. A list of materials needed for each experiment, together with alternatives has also been included in the content package to facilitate the learners. The content has been provided by ThinkTac and is also available on the Diksha portal,” the circular added.
