Out of the total 11 State-run universities in Odisha, nine are grappling with acute shortage of teaching staff. While the total number of sanctioned posts of these universities is 1,425, as many as 795 posts are lying vacant.
This was informed by State Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo in a written reply to a query by BJP MLA Mohan Charan Majhi.
Sahoo said Utkal University, Ravenshaw University, Sambalpur University, Berhampur University, Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo University, Gangadhar Meher University, Rama Devi Women’s University and Fakir Mohan University have 257, 267, 153, 196, 38, 115, 144, 138 and 117 sanctioned assistant professor, associate professor and professor posts respectively.
Rajendra University’s total sanctioned posts of assistant professor, associate professor and professor are 72, 36 and 18 respectively. And there is no vacant post in the university. Similarly, the total sanctioned posts of assistant professor, associate professor and professor in Kalahandi University are 64, 32 and 16 respectively and it has no vacant posts.
In government degree colleges, the number of sanctioned posts is 2,306. Of them, 1,147 posts are lying vacant.
The OPSC has already been requested to recruit 606 candidates in the government degree colleges. The recruitment process is in progress, the Minister stated.
He also mentioned it that as many as 76 lecturers have been promoted to professors. The government doesn’t have any information regarding the students pursuing their M.Phil and Ph.D. having jumped the stipulated time due to vacant professor posts.
