On Saturday, the senior bureaucrat and Odisha cadre IAS Tuhin Kanta Pandey was designated as the new Union Finance Secretary.

The appointment of the 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Odisha cadre has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, as per the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Pandey is currently posted as the secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).

The vacancy was created following the appointment of TV Somanathan as the Cabinet secretary last month. As per the convention, the senior-most secretary in the Union finance ministry is designated as the Finance Secretary.

Pandey has worked in various capacities in the Government of Odisha and the Government of India.

In the early part of his career, he worked as Executive Director and Managing Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation (OSFC) and Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) respectively.

Pandey was the Collector of Sambalpur District. He was also the Joint Secretary of the Planning Commission.

“It is a matter of pride for Odisha. The 1987-batch Odisha cadre IAS officer has worked in Odisha for many years and held key posts. He was the Home Secretary and Finance Secretary. When he went on central deputation, he used his vast experience well and came closer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of his skills. He played an important role during the preparation of the Union budget. Earlier, it was expected that he would be elevated to a coveted post, which has now come true,” said senior journalist Akshay Sahu.
