Drunken father sets son ablaze
Keonjhar: Irked over his son’s mischief, an inebriated father set his son ablaze here in Sadhusingh area under Barbil block.
Rasananda Patra burnt his son alive as the innocent child did not concentrate on his studies despite his repeated warnings.
As per reports, Rasananda who works as a driver was teaching both his sons Balabhadra and Narendra. The younger of the two sons, Narendra did not bother and was busy playing around. Rasananda had to beat his son to prevent him doing so.
Instead of focusing on his studies the 5-year-old kid did not bother at all and continued with his mischief. The child even did not pay a heed to his father’s repeated warnings that he would set him on fire.
Following this the intoxicated father sprinkled kerosene on him and set him on fire. Seeing his son burning, Rasananda tried to save his son. Rasananda’s wife also rushed for water and tried to save her son by extinguishing the fire out but only by the time the child had sustained severe burn injuries.
Then Narendra was rushed to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.
“I sprinkled kerosene on him and threatened to set him on fire if he would not study. But he accidentally caught fire. Thereafter, I tried a lot to save him but I failed,” accused father Rasananda Patra said.
“He said that his father was trying to threaten him by lighting the match stick but he accidentally caught fire,” mother Pratima Patra said.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case and have arrested Rasananda after the incidence.
“The child’s death is not intentional, but the father is responsible for his child’s death,” Barbil IIC K.C. Parida said.
