The State, where farmers are demanding lifting of the ban, has been consistently following up the matter with the Union Government, he said.

The CM was speaking after inaugurating the crushing season at a sugar factory owned by the daughter of MLA Dileep Deshmukh in Deoni teshil here in Central Maharashtra.

Chavan said he was aware that onion farmers are agitating and demanding to lift the ban, which was imposed a few months ago to curb the soaring prices of onion.

Since then the onion prices have come down.

Former Union Minister Shivraj Patil, Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, State Ministers Harshawardhan Patil and Satej Patil were present on the occasion.

Chavan said Maharashtra has a large number of private and cooperative sugar factories and there are many proposals pending with the government to open such units.
