Serial imposter Bidhu Prakash Swain alias Ramesh Swain, who was recently arrested for conning and marrying as many as 17 women in different parts of the country by posing as a doctor, is actually a Matric fail.

The shocking disclosure was made by Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash on Thursday. Significantly, despite his low educational qualification, most of Swain’s victims were middle-aged, educated and successful women.

According to Dash, the Capital city police had contacted the relatives of Swain following his arrest to know his background. They in turn informed the police that Swain had failed to complete his Class 10 studies. “This is being verified,” Dash said.

Apart from duping women by acquiring money and other properties after tying them in wed- lock, Swain has conned multiple people on the pretext of providing employment and arranging seat for MBBS courses. Swain had set up two clinics after obtaining franchises of a premier health care centre in Cuttack. One clinic was set up in Baramba and another in Cuttack city, the Bhubaneswar DCP said.

“The accused didn’t even pay salary to around 15 women whom he had appointed at the clinic in Baramba. He had also duped a doctor of some lakhs after engaging him at the clinic in Cuttack city,” said Dash.

According to Dash, apart from the doctors at his clinic, 15 of his ‘wives’ have also lodged cheating complaints against Swain. He had also cheated another doctor of Rs 60,000 on the pretext of getting admission to the latter’s son at King George's Medical College in Lucknow.

“We have moved court seeking custodial remand of Swain to conduct further investigation regarding his financial fraud. More and more women and other victims of Swain’s con act are coming forward with complaints. We suspect some people are involved in abetting Swain in committing such frauds,” said Dash.

Meanwhile, police today conducted searches at the rented house of Swain in Patrapada. Several documents have been seized by the sleuths. Notably, Swain had taken the house on rent after identifying himself as the Deputy Director of Health Department. He had also paid an advance of Rs 20,000 to the owner of the house, police said.
