Unidentified miscreants decamped with gold ornaments and donation boxes of three temples at Baliapati village under Basta block in Balasore district late last night.

As per preliminary reports, the robbers have looted gold ornaments worth over Rs 3 lakh from the temples. Meanwhile, Singla police has started an investigation into the incident and assured that all the miscreants will be nabbed soon.

Cases of loot from temples is not new in Odisha. Several instances of loot from temples have been reported across the State in the last couple of years.

On March 31, miscreants had reportedly decamped with cash and other valuables from Mausi Maa temple located at Balagandi chhak in Puri district. Though the exact amount of stolen valuables and cash could not be ascertained, local residents had blamed poor security measures as the reason behind the theft at the temple.

In June, the donation box (Hundi) of Biswashanti Akhanda Harinama Sankirtan temple located at the west gate of Sri Jagannath temple in Puri was also looted, highlighting serious breach in the high security area. Later, a complaint was lodged at the Singhadwar police station in this regard.
