In a most-awaited development for Odisha, the costly Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) facility will be rolled out for critically ill patients at the Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital from August 15, the chief of the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) CBK Mohanty informed on Saturday.
The preparations for the installation of the critical patient care equipment have reached last stages. A total of 9 ECMO machines have been set up in SCB medical and adequate manpower resources have been appointed to handle the supportive treatment facility, said the DMET director.
A batch of health experts have returned from Kolkata after undergoing necessary training program in the management of ECMO machines, said Mohanty.
The authorities of the SCB medical have established two separate ECMO units with the first ward having six machines and the second one with three machines.
The first unit will cater to the needs of the patients suffering from post-Covid and other serious complications needing the supportive care of the ECMO. Similarly, Covid patients will undergo treatment in the second unit, said the DMET chief.
