The JN.1 variant, a new COVID-19 variant, has sparked concerns in India. Classified as a ‘variant of interest’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the JN.1 variant has reached India and is spreading panic.

Initially identified in Luxembourg, the sub-variant is a descendant of the Pirola variant (BA.2.86) which has its origin in the Omicron sub-variant. Till now, the variant has killed one person in Kerala while taking India’s active COVID-19 cases to 1828.
