New Delhi: Congress on Thursday cried foul over the mysterious death of a top Uttar Pradesh medical officer in Lucknow jail and suspected that he might have been murdered.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Y S Sachan, the main accused in the murder of Chief Medical Officer (Family Welfare) B P Singh, was found dead under mysterious circumstances last night inside the Lucknow district jail hospital.

"He (Sachan) was arrested and last night, according to the government, he comitted suicide, but as per circumstances it does not look like that it was a suicide. May be the persons, who killed Dr (Vinod) Arya (CMO) and Dr Singh, also have murdered Dr Sachan," Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh said.

The Congress leader said the party had demanded a CBI probe into the death of Dr Arya, but "nothing happened" and even in Dr Singh`s case, no security was provided to him.

"Dr Arya was shot dead. We demanded CBI probe, but nothing has happened. Four months later Dr B P Singh was killed, even when he had filed a complaint with the police stating threat to his life and demanded security - but no security was provided. Rahul Gandhi ji himself sought information on this through RTI."

Sachan was named in CMO murder case as the main accused by police following the arrest of three persons by the Special Task Force on June 17. Singh was shot dead by unidentified persons on the morning of April 2.

Sachan was arrested immediately after Singh`s murder when the investigating agencies detected swindling of funds to the tune of several crore of rupees in the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission in Uttar Pradesh.
