New Delhi: Congress today reacted sharply to Narendra Modi`s remarks accusing the party of trying to run a parallel government through Governor`s office in Gujarat saying the BJP leader was making "irresponsible" statements as he has a "lot to hide".

"It appears Modi has a lot to hide. It appears Modi wants to keep hidden, what he is hiding. It appears Modi does not want a Lokayukta to look into his corrupt misdeeds," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

"It appears for that reason he is assailing and attacking Constitutional functionaries, which he has been doing for many many years starting with former Chief Election Commissioner.

So he is continuing with his tradition of irresponsible utterances," he said.

Singhvi made the remarks in reply to a volley of questions on Modi`s statements at a rally near Ahmedabad.

"In 2004, just 24 hours after the UPA government came to power, Congress had said that Modi should pack up as Centre will invoke President`s rule here. Since then they are conspiring to remove my government," Modi alleged.

Modi government and the Governor have been at loggerheads since the latter appointed Justice R A Mehta as Lokayukta, bypassing the state government. She has returned as many as five bills in the last three years passed by the state Assembly.

"The Congress has not been able to impress people of Gujarat for last 20 years and they have remained out of power. So now they are trying to run a parallel government by using the Governor House," Modi said.
