Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh): BJP today said faulty policies of the Centre and the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh were responsible for fertiliser crisis in the state.

"Price of di-ammonium phosphate, a non-urea fertiliser, has increased from Rs 960 to Rs 1,200 and also it is not easily available to farmers," BJP national vice-president Kalraj Mishra said here.

National Cooperative Union of India has itself admitted that the fertiliser priced at Rs 550 was being sold between Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500, he claimed. "Last year to reduce subsidy burden, the centre deregulated all fertilisers except urea from the government control and as a result, prices have sky rocketed. It should be reviewed," he said.

Alleging that farmers` interests were not in the agenda of the UPA and Mayawati governments, Mishra said paddy growers were facing problems due to the wrong policies of both the governments.

"Around 5.5 lakh tonne paddy is available in the market and the Mayawati government has been able to purchase only 70,000 tonne as against the procurement target of 25 lakh tonne," he alleged.
