The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Saturday announced its intention to introduce a new batch of Rs 20 denomination banknotes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.

In its latest notification, the RBI has clearly stated that these upcoming notes will prominently feature the signature of Sanjay Malhotra, the newly appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

This marks his first issuance of currency notes in this denomination, signifying a continuation of the RBI's practice of updating banknotes with the signature of the current Governor.

The newly printed Rs 20 banknotes will retain the existing design and features of the current Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. This means that there will be no changes in terms of size, color, motif, or security elements.

The front side will continue to bear the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, along with other elements familiar to the public, ensuring ease of recognition and use. The reverse side will also remain unchanged, continuing to depict the image of the Ellora Caves — a UNESCO World Heritage site that reflects India’s rich cultural heritage.

The issuance of these notes is part of the RBI’s routine process to maintain the availability and quality of currency in circulation. It also ensures that notes are updated in alignment with changes in leadership at the apex bank, while maintaining public trust and continuity in the appearance of currency.

Importantly, the RBI has clarified that all Rs20 denomination banknotes issued in the past — whether under the previous Governors or earlier series — will remain valid and continue to be accepted as legal tender. This move reinforces the stability of India’s monetary system and reassures the public that earlier versions of the Rs 20 note will continue to hold full value and can be used in all financial transactions.

Through this initiative, the RBI continues its commitment to efficient currency management and upholding the integrity of India’s banknotes, while incorporating changes that reflect the current leadership of the central bank.
