On the last day of the rush to file taxes on the income tax portal, the Revenue Secretary, Sanjay Malhotra, made it clear that the government would not extend the deadline for filing ITR.
As a result, people were visibly concerned, and there was a surge in traffic on the official website.
According to a tweet from the official Twitter handle of Income Tax India, more than 11 lakh income tax returns (ITRs) were filed by taxpayers until 12 pm on July 31, and an additional 3.39 lakh tax returns were filed in the last hour before the deadline.
The government has maintained that the deadline for filing ITRs would end on July 31, and an extension is unlikely.
As of July 30, a total of 6.13 crore ITRs had been filed, as per another tweet from Income Tax India's official handle.
For taxpayers seeking assistance, the official Twitter handle of ITR shared the following message: "For any assistance, please connect on orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in. We will be glad to assist!"
