"We can do more politics than they (BJP) have done, but we should do the politics for development of the country," Congress member Manish Tewari said participating in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Motion of Thanks to the President for her address to Parliament.
On alleged irregularities in the conduct of Commonwealth Games (CWG), he said the Congress party had set an example by asking Suresh Kalmadi to resign from party post on mere allegations and set up the Shunglu committee to probe the matter.
"You (BJP) are pointing fingers at us. What have you done in Karnataka," he asked.
Initiating the debate on the Motion of Thanks, Congress member P C Chacko mounted a strong defence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against senior BJP leader L K Advani`s remarks of being a "weak Prime Minister".
Alluding to the visit of top leaders of the US, China, France, Britain, Russia to India, Chacko asked how the Prime Minister could be called weak when all the leading countries were declaring support to India.
"We are happy to have a Prime Minister like Dr Manmohan Singh whose skills of macro-economic management have been the most sought after the world over," he said.
Chacko, a member from Thrissur, also attacked the CPI(M) alleging that its Kerala secretary was also involved in the Rs 240 crore Lavalin scam.
He also sought to ridicule the CPI(M) allegations of government surrendering its independent foreign policy by signing a nuclear cooperation agreement with the US.
Citing that heads of state and government of leading nations have hailed India as an emerging power, Chacko wondered how India could be called a weak nation when world powers have declared their support to it.
He credited the government led by Singh with creating a new atmosphere of friendship with world powers.
The Congress leader also sought to dismiss the anti- American stand of the Left parties and termed it as a mere "political ploy" which even they are not serious about.
Chacko said the Left parties, which have ruled West Bengal for a long time, have failed to give a parallel example of development in the country.
He contended that it was West Bengal along with Chhatisgarh and Orissa where Naxalism has raised its ugly head.
