Beauty contest for rural men, women in Madurai
Madurai: Move away cat walks. A different beauty pageant here will feature rural men and women take the ramps in their traditional Tamil attire of sari and dhoti. The novel contest "Nam Namathu Bhoomi" (we and our land) is to be organised by the District Administration exclusively for rural men and women in various age groups including 30, 50, and 80, officials said today.
"It will not be like Miss Madurai or Miss Madras contest where the traditional dress and make-up and the identities of the Tamil culture are not given importance. Our contest will give importance to the local attire, local way of dressing," an official said.
It would not be a cat walk contest. The women should come in saris, in their traditional hair dress, carrying a pot on their hip. "We compare women`s walk to "Anna Nadai" (walking by divine Swan) and we will see if that style is there and not cat," the official said.
The men should come in dhoti and shirt or banian and `talaipha` headgear. The first three winners in men and women categories would be given prizes. The date of the contest, which would have prizes for the top three finishers in both men and women categories, would be announced soon, officials said.
