Armed miscreants loot bank in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Armed miscreants looted Rs 3.75 lakh from the Maneswar branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) near here on Saturday, police said.

Altogether five dacoits armed with lethal weapons entered the bank at around 11.15 hours and threatened the staff and about 15 customers with gun-point.

They slapped at least two staff members and asked the customers and staff to handover their mobile phones and bike keys. They also warned them of dire consequences if anyone sounded an alarm or informed the police.

The dacoits took the manager of the bank to the strong room from where they robbed Rs 3.75 lakh, police said.

The miscreants then dragged the staff including manager at gun point to the toilet of the bank and closed it from outside before fleeing the spot.

After they left the bank with the booty, the staff managed to break open the door of the toilet and came out.

Incidentally, the bank, though located on the busy national highway, had no facility of CCTV or security guard.

The dacoits fled the spot in motorbikes of the bank staff and a customer and also taken away a few mobile phones.

Security had been beefed up in the area and efforts are on to nab the miscreants, the sources said adding inquiry into the incident was continuing.
