Hyderabad: The ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh on Friday appealed the opposition parties to help in electing the Assembly Speaker unanimously as per tradition even as main opposition TDP decided to field its candidate in the election scheduled for tomorrow.

"It is a good democratic tradition to elect the Speaker unanimously. Though the TDP has decided to field candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, we would still like to appeal to them and other parties to cooperate with us," Congress Whip Kondru Murali Mohan told reporters.

The Assembly and also Legislative Council would meet tomorrow to elect the Speaker and Chairman respectively.

Election to the Speaker`s post is necessitated as it fell vacant after N Kiran Kumar Reddy became Chief Minister. The Legislative Council Chairman`s post has been vacant as incumbent A Chakrapani`s term ended couple of months ago. He has, however, been nominated for a fresh term by the Governor and is set to become Chairman again tomorrow.

The Assembly and Council would meet in the morning and evening respectively tomorrow for the election.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy criticised Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) and TRS for reportedly saying that the MLAs from Telangana region should vote against the no-confidence motion moved by main opposition TDP.

"It is not fair to say that we should work for the fall of the government. The JAC should remain focused on achieving Telangana. It is not correct to talk about destabilising the government. We can exert pressure for Telangana only if the government is there," he said.
