In a tragic road accident, a woman was killed and two others sustained critical injuries after a speeding car rammed into a group of 37 Kanwariyas at Salepur's Nischintakoili area in Cuttack district Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Chinmayee Behera of Jinhipur. The injured are Dipti Ranjan Rout and Purna Chandra Behera.

According to sources, the mishap took place when the group of 37 Kanwariyas was on their way to Siddheswar Mahadev shrine in Paikarapur after lifting water from Babujanga ghat near Tehsil chhak at Nischintakoili. A speeding car hit the group causing the death of Chinmayee on the spot, and leaving two others critically injured, a source informed, adding that the injured were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

After hitting the group of Kanwariyas, the driver of the car lost control and collided with a pick-up van, sources added.

"We were waiting for other members of the group when the speeding car hit the trio and turned turtle. The condition of the two injured is stated to be critical," said Malay Kumar Ghadei, a Kanwariya of the group.

"While Chinmayee was received death, the two injured were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital after necessary treatment.  Of the two injured, condition of one is very critical," said Dr Mrutyunjaya Mohapata, Nischintakoili community health centre. 

Meanwhile, the police have detained the driver of the car and launched an investigation into the matter.
