Angry over the death of a Class III student in an accident, residents of Sindhiguda under Nandahandi block in Nabarangpur district staged a night-long road blocking protest seeking compensation for the bereaved family.
Vehicular traffic on Nandahandi-Nabarangpur road came to a standstill as the local residents blocked the route after the Class III student was mowed down by an unknown vehicle at Sindhiguda on Tuesday. Despite the intervention of the police, the agitators are yet to call off their protest.
The victim’s uncle Saheb Bhatra said, “The driver fled the spot without surrendering himself to the police following the accident. Besides, the owner of the vehicle is yet to reach the spot to compensate the victim’s family. On basis of a complaint filed by us, police have seized the vehicle. The victim’s parents cannot get back their child. So we are demanding Rs 20 lakh as compensation for them.”
Brundaban Tripathy, a local, said, “The Class III student was injured severely on his way to school when a Bolero driver hit him and fled the scene. He was rushed to the nearest hospital, but doctors referred him to Koraput district headquarters hospital where he succumbed. Till now, both the driver and Bolero owner are yet to be traced. That’s why we launched the road blockade.”
