As many as six people were killed and five others sustained grievous serious injuries after a Tata Magic they were travelling in rammed into a trailer near the Gaikanapali area under Hemgiri police limits in Sundargarh district in the wee hours of Saturday.

Due to dense fog, the driver hit the van into the trailer stationed alongside the road, leading to the mishap. The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.

According to sources, the villagers were returning home after the ‘kirtan’ ceremony on the occasion of Diwali. They were just close to their village when the mishap occurred, killing six people and leaving five others critically injured.

The driver of the van could not spot the trailer due to fog-induced low visibility. The incident has spread shockwaves in the area. On being informed, local police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured to the local hospital with the help of residents. The bodies have been seized and sent for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the incident has spread outrage in the area as locals alleged the trailer was stationed in the middle of the road. Angry residents caused a road blockade, demanding necessary compensation for the kin of the deceased.

The situation remained tense in the area during the filing of this report.
