Two persons lost their lives after the car they were travelling in crashed into a tree along Gop road under Konark police limits in Puri district. Sources said the car rammed into a mango tree after the driver lost balance on the wheels of the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle had a close shave with serious injuries while two other occupants died on the spot, it was learnt. The deceased have been identified as Biswajit Sahoo from Niali Kantapada area and Pradipta Behera from the capital city.
Sources said they were on their way to Konark from Bhubaneswar in the intervening Tuesday and Wednesday night. The vehicle has been completely damaged following the collision. Locals rushed to the rescue of the injured driver Tapas Sahu and alerted the cops and fire personnel.
The driver broke his leg and was initially admitted to Gop Hospital. He was later shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar where his condition remains critical.
While the reason for the tragic mishap is yet to be ascertained, sources attributed it to high-speed driving by the driver. However, police suspect the driver might have dozed off, leading to the mishap.
