Cuttack: A fast track court here has sentenced a 30-year-old man to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) of seven years for raping a minor girl in November, 2010. The additional district judge of the fast track court while convicting Abhay Mallick of Choudwar near here on Tuesday also imposed a fine of Rs 7000.

Mallick was also found guilty under section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC and was handed over a five-year-RI with a fine of Rs 5000. The court also held him guilty of charges under section 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC and awarded sentences of six months on both counts.

All the sentences shall run concurrently, the judge announced in the verdict after examining as many as 11 prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses during the trial of the case that was over in less than a year.

According to prosecution, a 13-year-old girl with her 9-year-old brother was way-laid by the accused in the evening of November 2, 2010 in his moped. The siblings had gone to the shop of the accused to fetch mosquito repellant coils.

"The accused took the sister-brother duo to his nearby godown and confined the boy in a separate room and raped the minor girl in an adjacent room. He then deserted them at a nearby temple the next day morning," said the prosecution. Following a police complaint by the girl`s mother, police had arrested the accused from his hideout in Choudwar on November 3, 2010.
