Agnivesh Agarwal, son of Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal, passed away following a cardiac arrest at a New York hospital on Wednesday. He was 49. The tragic incident occurred while he was recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident in the United States.
In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Anil Agarwal said his son had been convalescing at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and was believed to be on the path to recovery. “We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us,” he wrote in a post on X, describing the day as the darkest of his life.
A Life of Achievement and Simplicity
Born in Patna on June 3, 1976, Agnivesh studied at Mayo College, Ajmer. He went on to establish Fujeirah Gold and later became Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. Remembering his son’s professional and personal journey, Agarwal described Agnivesh as a sportsman, musician, and leader who earned widespread respect while remaining humble and warm.
“To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world,” Agarwal wrote, adding that he and his wife Kiran are devastated by the loss.
Commitment to Social Causes Renewed
The Vedanta Group chairman also recalled a shared pledge between father and son to work towards social priorities such as food security, education for children, women’s empowerment, and employment for young Indians. He reaffirmed his commitment to dedicate over 75% of the group’s earnings to initiatives benefiting society.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and his wife expressed their condolences to the Vedanta Group Chairman, saying they were heartbroken by the demise of Agnivesh. “May God provide you and your family the strength to bear this unimaginable loss,” Rijiju said in a post on X.
The news has drawn widespread condolences from business leaders, colleagues, and well-wishers across the country.
