Ready to welcome the world, says PM Modi as Ahmedabad set to host 2030 Commonwealth Games
With the global body Commonwealth Sport confirming Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, India is poised to stage the centenary edition of the Games at home.
As the official announcement came through, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of India and the sporting ecosystem.
On X, the PM wrote, “Delighted that India has won the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030! Congratulations to the people of India and the sporting ecosystem. It is our collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map. With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to be celebrating these historic games with great enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming the world!”
The Games are expected to return to India for the first time since 2010, giving Ahmedabad, already brimming with sports infrastructure, a fresh international spotlight.
As host, India has the option to propose up to two additional sports for inclusion. Officials have indicated that Yoga is being considered as one of those, aiming to showcase this traditional discipline on the Commonwealth stage.
Beyond Yoga, India is also eyeing the return of sports like badminton, hockey, wrestling, shooting, and T20 cricket, which were dropped from the 2026 Games schedule.
The full programme for 2030 is expected to feature 15–17 sports, offering a broad platform for Indian athletes.
Authorities say Ahmedabad is well-prepared. Key venues, including plans around the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and a sports hub at Karai near Gandhinagar, are slated for completion by 2028–29, giving ample time for final preparations.
This announcement is being hailed as a major opportunity for India; not only to host a smooth, high-profile Commonwealth Games, but also to reinforce its credentials to host global sporting events in the future.
