Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, becoming the 18th Parliament worldwide to be addressed by him. Describing Ethiopia as the “land of lions,” PM Modi said he felt a sense of familiarity with the country, drawing a parallel with his home state of Gujarat, which is also known for its lions.
Calling it a privilege to speak in the “temple of democracy,” the Prime Minister said he carried the greetings of 1.4 billion Indians and expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s democratic journey. He noted that when the will of the people aligns with the functioning of the state, progress moves forward with purpose.
PM Modi thanked Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for conferring on him the Grand Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, the nation’s highest civilian award, accepting it on behalf of the people of India. Highlighting cultural links, he said both India and Ethiopia share ancient civilisational roots and reverence for the land as “mother,” reflected in Vande Mataram and Ethiopia’s national anthem.
The address followed wide-ranging talks between the two leaders, during which India and Ethiopia elevated ties to a Strategic Partnership, focusing on cooperation in food and health security, digital infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, energy and critical minerals. Later, PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Adwa Museum and the Adwa Victory Memorial, the MEA said.
