Political circles in Bihar are witnessing intense speculation as reports suggest that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may step down from his post after filing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. According to sources, the Janata Dal (United) chief is expected to submit his nomination for the Upper House of Parliament on Thursday. If elected, he is unlikely to continue as the Chief Minister, sparking discussions about the future political leadership in the state.
Rajya Sabha Nomination Sparks Political Buzz
The possibility of Nitish Kumar moving to the Rajya Sabha has raised questions about who might take charge of the state government. Alongside these discussions, attention has also turned towards his son, Nishant Kumar, and the potential role he could play in the evolving political scenario.
Sources indicate that Nishant Kumar could be considered for the post of Deputy Chief Minister. Although neither the JDU nor the NDA alliance has officially confirmed the development, political conversations around his possible entry into active politics have gained momentum. A senior minister close to Nitish Kumar recently hinted at a ‘dramatic entry’ for Nishant Kumar.
Key Meetings Fuel Speculation
Adding to the speculation, JDU national working president Sanjay Jha arrived in Patna from Delhi on Wednesday and reportedly held an extended closed-door meeting with Nitish Kumar. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, also travelled to Patna, further intensifying political discussions.
Focus on Bihar’s Rajya Sabha Arithmetic
The political developments come amid calculations surrounding Bihar’s fifth Rajya Sabha seat. A candidate requires the support of 41 MLAs to secure a seat. With a combined strength of 202 MLAs in the Bihar Assembly, the NDA alliance including BJP, JDU, LJP (Ram Vilas), HAM and RLJM is well positioned to win four seats comfortably.
Political Uncertainty Continues
However, the fifth seat remains a tighter contest. Upendra Kushwaha has been named as the NDA candidate, though the announcement drew attention after LJP chief Chirag Paswan indicated he was unaware of the decision. To prevent cross-voting or absenteeism, NDA MLAs have been asked to remain in Patna ahead of Thursday’s nomination filing, as the state awaits clarity on its next political chapter.
