NIA Arrests MBBS Student From Bengal For Suspected Terror Links Photograph: (ANI)
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested an MBBS student from Al-Falah University, identified as Janisur (Nisar) Alam, in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district for his suspected links to terror groups. According to a senior police officer, Alam was picked up from Surjapur Bazar on Friday morning while returning from a family wedding in his ancestral village near Dalkhola. Investigators had been tracking his movements using mobile tower data before intercepting him.
Officials say Alam had travelled home with his mother and sister for the wedding, and his presence in the area had drawn suspicion after he was reportedly seen “loitering” near a local station. During initial questioning, he allegedly attempted to flee, after which he was formally taken into custody. Digital devices and documents were seized, but the NIA has not yet clarified his exact connection to the recent Delhi blast, which killed 12 people near the Red Fort and has been officially termed a terrorist attack.
Alam’s family members strongly denied any wrongdoing, describing him as a quiet and studious young man immersed in his studies. His uncle said the accusations were “unbelievable,” while his mother insisted he had always been law-abiding. Alam is being transported to Siliguri for further interrogation.
Meanwhile, the NIA also raided the home of migrant worker Moinul Hasan in Murshidabad’s Nabagram. Hasan had previously worked in Delhi and Mumbai and shared accommodation with a Bangladeshi national, prompting investigators to probe whether he maintained links with extremist elements or had any connection to the arrested student from Uttar Dinajpur.
