The victim’s family has accused the TTE of forcibly throwing her out of the train. Based on their complaint, the Government Railway Police (GRP) registered an FIR at Etawah on Thursday. However, officials said that at least five co-passengers, in written statements to the Railways, have defended the TTE and claimed that the woman jumped on her own.

According to officials, Arti Yadav boarded the sleeper coach of the Patna–Anand Vihar special train from Kanpur around 7.30 am on Tuesday. Around 9.30 am, TTE Santosh Kumar checked her ticket and found that she was carrying a valid ticket for another train. Passengers stated that the TTE asked her to move to the general compartment.

In a written statement, passenger Anchal Srivastava said the woman first agreed to get down at the next station but later threatened to jump when asked again to shift coaches. Srivastava claimed she then picked up her bag and jumped from the train near Bharthana station. Another passenger, Raj Vaibhav Singh, echoed this account, adding that the woman threw her Aadhaar card at the TTE before jumping.

However, her husband, Ajay Singh, an Indian Navy personnel, alleged foul play. He claimed the TTE pushed his wife from the speeding train, pointing to injuries on her back, the recovery of her bag nearly four kilometres away, and her missing mobile phone. Questioning the passengers’ statements, Singh demanded a thorough investigation by the GRP.
