Holika Dahan 2026: March 2 or 3? Check date, muhurat and puja timings
Holi, one of the most vibrant festivals in Hindu tradition, celebrates the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. In 2026, however, confusion has arisen as Holika Dahan coincides with Bhadra Kaal and a total lunar eclipse, prompting devotees to seek clarity on the correct date and auspicious timings.
According to Drik Panchang, Holika Dahan will be observed on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The Purnima Tithi begins at 5:55 PM on March 2 and ends at 5:07 PM on March 3. The recommended Holika Dahan muhurat is from 6:22 PM to 8:50 PM. Bhadra Punchha will prevail from 1:25 AM to 2:35 AM, followed by Bhadra Mukha from 2:35 AM to 4:30 AM.
Auspicious Timings and Observance
Holika Dahan is traditionally performed during Pradosh Kaal while avoiding Bhadra Mukha, which is considered inauspicious. Based on calculations, the ritual may be observed on either date. On March 2, Pradosh Kaal from 6:24 PM to 6:36 PM offers a brief 12-minute auspicious window. Alternatively, devotees may perform the ritual on March 3 after the eclipse ends at 6:47 PM. Religious guidance, regional customs, and family traditions are considered when choosing the time.
Rituals and Significance
Preparations begin days in advance, with communities collecting wood for the bonfire. During the muhurat, devotees perform puja, offer prayers for protection and prosperity, and circumambulate the fire. Grains and coconuts are offered into the flames, symbolising the destruction of negativity.
The ritual commemorates the legend of Prahlad and Holika, marking the triumph of faith and righteousness over arrogance and evil.
