Government reviews aviation preparedness amid evolving Middle East situation

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) conducted a comprehensive review of India’s aviation preparedness in view of the emerging situation in the Middle East and its potential impact on international air operations.

Union Civil Aviation Minister chaired a high-level meeting via video conference with senior officials of the Ministry, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), airline operators, and major airport authorities across the country. The review focused on ensuring passenger safety, maintaining operational continuity, and strengthening real-time coordination amid multiple airspace restrictions and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued in parts of the region.

Airlines Directed to Monitor Airspace Closely

Indian carriers operating international flights have been advised to continuously monitor airspace advisories, NOTAMs, and route restrictions issued by concerned international authorities. Airlines have been directed to undertake timely rerouting or diversion of flights wherever necessary, strictly in line with global safety protocols and established contingency planning procedures.

Officials emphasized that operational decisions must prioritise passenger and crew safety, especially in light of evolving airspace dynamics in the Middle East region.

Airports on Operational Alert

Major international airports across India have been placed on operational alert to handle potential flight diversions, unscheduled landings, and increased passenger facilitation requirements.

The Airports Authority of India, along with private airport operators, has been instructed to maintain enhanced coordination with airlines to manage ground handling services, aircraft parking bays, passenger amenities, crew logistics, and immigration support if required. Preparedness measures are aimed at minimizing disruption and ensuring smooth handling of additional air traffic, should diversions occur.

DGCA to Ensure Regulatory Compliance

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been advised to remain in close coordination with airlines to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations, crew duty time limitations, and operational advisories. Continuous monitoring mechanisms are being activated to assess developments and mitigate any cascading impact on domestic flight schedules.

Coordination with Ministry of External Affairs

The Civil Aviation Ministry is also in close touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to ensure seamless information sharing and coordinated response in case of any emergent situation involving Indian carriers or Indian nationals abroad.

Advisory for Passengers

Passengers have been advised to stay in regular contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates on travel schedules. Airlines have been directed to proactively communicate with passengers regarding delays, rerouting, or diversions to minimize inconvenience.

Reiterating that passenger and crew safety remains paramount, the Ministry said the situation is under constant watch, and further updates will be issued as necessary to ensure safe, orderly, and efficient air operations.
