During the Diwali week in 2025, several states across India will observe bank holidays in line with regional festival celebrations.
According to reports, these closures align with the RBI’s negotiable instruments holiday schedule and follow state-specific observance of Diwali dates.
The Diwali festival itself is slated for Monday, October 20, 2025, though a few states mark it on October 21 along with Govardhan Puja, leading to variation in bank holiday dates.
On October 18 (Dhanteras), banks will remain open nationwide while on October 19 (Choti Diwali) they will be closed everywhere.
On October 20 (Diwali day), banks are scheduled to shut down in many states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and several others.
Meanwhile, October 22 (Govardhan Puja) is a bank holiday in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Rajasthan.

On October 23 (Bhai Dooj), banks will remain closed in Gujarat, Sikkim, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh.
Diwali Date Confusion
There has been confusion over the exact date of Diwali this year. Some calendars list the festival on Monday, October 20, while others mark it on Tuesday, October 21.
However, as per the official government calendar, Diwali 2025 will be celebrated on Monday, October 20, and most states are likely to observe a bank holiday on the same day.
