Delhi University imposes one-month ban on protests (Enhanced Using AI)
Delhi University has imposed a month-long ban on meetings, rallies, processions and protests across its campuses, citing concerns over law and order.
The directive was issued by the University Proctor following recent unrest linked to demonstrations over the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) proposed equity regulations. The Supreme Court had earlier put the 2026 regulations on hold, observing that certain provisions appeared vague and could potentially be misused. The court said the existing 2012 UGC regulations would remain in force until further review.
In its notification, the university said intelligence inputs suggested that unrestricted gatherings could disrupt traffic, threaten safety and disturb public peace. The order prohibits public meetings, dharnas, protests, or agitations, as well as the assembly of five or more persons without permission. It also bars the carrying of potentially hazardous items such as torches and beacons, slogan-shouting, and any activity that may disturb normal campus functioning.
The move follows clashes between student groups during a protest over the equity guidelines. Rival organisations traded allegations of violence and intimidation. While one student group alleged instances of threats and caste-based abuse, another claimed that a journalist covering the protest was assaulted.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh appealed to students and faculty to maintain harmony and avoid actions that could damage the university’s reputation.
The proposed UGC regulations aim to address caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions by mandating special grievance redressal mechanisms for students from SC, ST and OBC communities. The Supreme Court has sought revisions, citing concerns over ambiguity in certain definitions.
