In a dramatic turn of events, climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday, just two days after violent clashes erupted in Leh during protests demanding Sixth Schedule inclusion and full statehood for Ladakh.
Arrest Before Press Meet
Wangchuk was scheduled to address the media at 2:30 pm but was detained before the briefing. The arrest was carried out by a Ladakh Police team led by DGP SD Singh Jamwal. Authorities have also suspended internet services across Leh, though charges against him remain unclear. The protest, which had largely remained peaceful for weeks, spiralled out of control on Wednesday, leaving four dead and several injured.
MHA Blames Wangchuk, He Denies Role
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) accused Wangchuk of instigating violence through “provocative statements.” However, the activist strongly denied the allegations, condemned the clashes, and ended his 15-day hunger strike in the aftermath.
In a separate blow, the MHA revoked the FCRA licence of SECMOL Wangchuk’s educational NGO citing financial irregularities. Calling the move a “witch hunt,” Wangchuk dismissed all charges.
Apex Body Leh Backs Wangchuk
Meanwhile, Apex Body Leh, which spearheads the statehood movement, defended the activist, asserting that their protest was peaceful.
Leaders explained that violence broke out when a section of youth turned unruly during a Leh bandh on September 24, vandalising the BJP office despite repeated appeals for calm.
“We remain committed to non-violence,” the group said, clarifying that Wangchuk had no role in triggering the unrest.
