Indian Railways has taken a major step towards improving passenger convenience by revising the timeline for reservation chart preparation, allowing travellers to check their ticket status much earlier than before. The new move is expected to significantly reduce last-minute anxiety, especially for those on waiting lists.
Until now, the first reservation chart was prepared just four hours before a train’s departure. This often left passengers uncertain about their travel plans until the final moments. With the revised system, passengers will now be able to know their confirmed, RAC, or waiting-list status up to 10 hours in advance, making journey planning smoother and more predictable.
Revised Chart Preparation Timeline
According to the new guidelines issued by the Railway Board, the first reservation chart will be prepared 10 hours before departure for trains scheduled between 2:01 pm and 11:59 pm, as well as those departing between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 am. This change ensures clearer and earlier visibility of ticket status for a large section of travellers.
Helping Passengers Plan Better
Railway officials said the decision was taken to ease stress for passengers, particularly those travelling from distant or rural areas to board long-distance trains. Early chart preparation allows travellers to plan accommodation, arrange connecting transport, or explore alternative travel options if their tickets remain unconfirmed.
Speaking to India Today, officials from the Railway Ministry said the advance preparation of charts will help ensure smoother and more organised journey planning for passengers.
Implementation Across All Zones
The Railway Board has directed all zonal divisions to implement the revised chart preparation schedule with immediate effect.
By allowing passengers to check their reservation status well in advance, Indian Railways aims to bring greater transparency, reduce uncertainty, and enhance the overall travel experience for millions of commuters across the country.
