After Odisha Amrit Bharat flag off, Indian Railways mulls dual Vande Bharat Sleeper launch

Following the successful flag-off of the Amrit Bharat Express in Odisha on Saturday, Indian Railways is reportedly preparing to introduce two Vande Bharat Sleeper trains simultaneously, marking a major development in long-distance semi-high-speed travel.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that both trains will be launched together once the second rake is ready, likely by mid-October 2025.

Two Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains To Operate Together

According to reports from The Indian Express, the first rake of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, unveiled in September 2024, has already completed trials and is stationed at Delhi’s Shakur Basti Coaching Depot.

It added that the second train is being manufactured and will likely be ready by October 15, 2025. Once both rakes are received, routes and operations will be finalised.

Design, Speed, And Passenger Amenities

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 kmph, making it one of the fastest sleeper services in India.

The trains feature upgraded passenger amenities, including integrated reading lights with USB charging ports, modular pantries for improved catering, public announcement and visual information systems, CCTV cameras, and inside display panels.

Special berths and toilets are provided for differently-abled travellers, while first AC coaches will offer hot-water showers. Thoughtfully designed berths and clean interiors aim to provide comfort for medium and long-distance travel.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to reshape long-distance travel in India, complementing the popular short-distance chair car Vande Bharat services.
