New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The Union government today appointed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta as the new Solicitor General of India, the second-highest rank for a law officer under government of India.
Mehta’s appointment was approved by the Appointment Committee of the cabinet (ACC) which directed him to assume office till June 30, 2020.
As per reports, the post was lying vacant since October 20, 2017 following the resignation of the former solicitor General of India Ranjit Kumar.
Mehta who has represented the central government in many important cases including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act, arrest of Bhima Koregaon activists, Aircel-Maxis case and the high profile 2G scam has been serving as Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014, since the BJP government came into force.
Henceforth, Mehta will represent the central government as a legal officer in courtroom proceedings.
Meanwhile, former MP Jay Panda congratulated Tushar Mehta on being appointed as the new Solicitor General of India.
