Kanpur: Shabnam Mausi, the first eunuch legislator in the country, will contest the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Kanpur Cantt constituency.

Mausi who had won as an independent candidate from Suhagpur Assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh`s Shahdol district in 2000, has filed her nomination as a candidate of Rashtriya Viklang Party here on Friday, poll officials said.

In 2008 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, 50-year-old Shabnam had unsuccessfully contested from Kotma segment of Shahdol on a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ticket. The Cantt seat is a Muslim-majority area that has about 2.87 lakh voters. All major parties, except BJP, have fielded Muslim candidates from the constituency.

While Congress has fielded veteran leader Abdul Mannan, SP has given ticket to Hasan Rumi. BSP has fielded Suhail Ansari, while Raghunandan Singh Bhadauria is the BJP nominee. According to political observers, Shabnam`s entry will make the contest close and interesting.
