The rail roko went off peacefully, barring a few incidents and 715 persons were taken into preventive custody in different Telangana districts like Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Medak and also in the state capital after police registered 54 cases against the agitators, police said.
"With elaborate security arrangements made by the AP police, the South Central Railways succeeded in running over 50 passenger and express trains, including 43 long distance trains from and via Andhra Pradesh by this evening," Additional DGP (Railways) VSK Kaumudi said.
"More rail services are being planned, for which, additional forces are being directed to report to the Railway Police from different parts of the state," he said.
TRS MLA K Vidyasagar (Korutla constituency) was taken into custody at Nalgonda, while Congress MLA Jupalli Krishna Rao was detained in Mahabubnagar for attempting to participate in rail roko agitation, police said.
Several pro-Telangana activists, belonging to different Telangana groups, were also taken into custody for squatting and holding cultural programmes on railway tracks and near stations in different Telangana districts.
Miscreants damaged a railway track at Talamadla near Bhiknoor mandal of Nizamabad district, by removing the track clips. Four of the accused were identified in this case and have been taken into custody, Additional Director General (Law and Order) S A Huda said.
Window panes of four buses were broken in Warangal town, when statehood supporters, who took out a rally towards the railway station, threw stones. Police resorted to mild caning to disperse them.
