In a significant step toward strengthening Odisha’s maritime infrastructure and promoting industrial logistics, the state government on Thursday signed a Concession Agreement with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the development of a captive jetty at Jatadhari. The Rs 2,100 crore investment marks another milestone in Odisha’s port-led growth strategy.
The agreement was signed at Lok Seva Bhawan in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who underlined the transformative impact of such infrastructure projects on the coastal economy and regional employment.
Located at the Jatadhari river mouth in Erasama tehsil of Jagatsinghpur district, the proposed jetty will have a cargo handling capacity of 52 million metric tonnes (MMT). Designed to meet the logistical needs of JSW’s steel and industrial operations, the jetty is also expected to support local trade and generate approximately 3,450 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
CM Majhi highlighted that Odisha is actively working in collaboration with private sector players to unlock the economic potential of its coastline.
“These projects will play a key role in transforming Odisha into a major hub for maritime trade. The state will work in partnership with private companies to enhance its maritime economy,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister also unveiled plans for four additional ports to further decentralize economic activity. Two new ports are proposed at Inchudi and Bahuda, while development work is underway for Subarnarekha and Astaranga ports.
These planned projects, integrated with industrial corridors and supported by road and rail networks, aim to foster balanced regional development and make Odisha a key player in India’s maritime and logistics landscape.
