New Delhi: In a move to minimise the revenge killing of wild animals due to human-wildlife conflicts, the state governments and Union Territories (UTs) have been advised to make swift payments of ex-gratia to the victims, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said.
In a letter, the ministry has urged the state governments and UTs to review their ex-gratia amount with each other and bring the compensation at par.
Moreover, it has asked the concerned departments to undertake systematic reforms to make prompt payment of ex-gratia by resolving inter-departmental issues.
Notably, the Enviornment ministry provides funding assistances to state governments and UTs for the human-wildlife victims through Central Sponsored Scheme for Integrated Development of Wildlife habitat (IDWH), as per the activities envisaged in the Project Tiger, Project Elephant and development of wildlife habitat in sanctuaries and national parks.
While the ministry provides Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for deaths or incapacitation, Rs 2 lakh and up to Rs 25,000 towards treatment are offered to the victims suffering grievous injury and minor injury respectively in human-wildlife fight.
