SC upholds Alistair Pereira conviction, jail term
The court passed the order on an special leave petition filed by Pereira challenging the Bombay High Court verdict convicting him.
Seven persons were killed and seven others injured when Pereira ran his car over them on November 12, 2006 in Mumbai. Pereira, 25, had run over his Toyota Corolla over 15 labourers sleeping on a pavement.
The trial court had convicted and sentenced him to six months jail term.
However, the trial court`s verdict had caused a huge public outcry and the Bombay High Court had subsequently taken suo motu cognisance of the case.
The high court had on September 6, 2007 enhanced his jail term from six months to three years. The high court had also imposed a fine of Rs 4.5 lakh and had directed that it be distributed among the victims and kin of the deceased. Pereira then approached the apex court challenging the high court verdict.
