Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC)-Southern Roopa Roshan Sahoo began a probe on Wednesday into the alleged death of two women after consuming mango kernel gruel at Mandipanka village under Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district, acting on the previous directive of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
According to official sources, RDC Sahoo reached the village and discussed with the bereaved families of the two deceased women. She gathered detailed information on circumstances that led to the consumption of mango kernel gruel, which caused food poisoning. The Commissioner also enquired about where the families are bringing their public distribution system (PDS) rice and when they got the PDS ration for the last time.

Later, the RDC proceeded to the Large Area Multipurpose Society (LAMPS) office in Brahmanigaon. She verified the distribution of PDS rice and discussed with the supply officer concerned.
“I got to know the chronology of events from the families and responses that they have got from different institutions so far, including problems faced by them. I just completed a preliminary probe and at a subsequent time, I will carry out a district-level inquiry. After that, I will submit my detailed report to the State government,” RDC Sahoo told mediapersons.
“We had not got ration for over three months. Hence, we had prepared the mango kernel gruel and consumed it. We demand sufficient PDS rice to be distributed at Mandipanka village,” deceased Runu Majhi’s father Kumara Majhi stated.
Worth mentioning, two women died after allegedly eating gruel prepared from mango kernel. Six others, who had consumed kernel, were also taken ill critically.
